Matt Goldman, a 22-year-old EMT with the Tri-Boro Volunteer Ambulance Corps (TBVAC), was driving home when he saw the crash in Montvale unfold, Mayor Mike Ghassali said. Without hesitation, he pulled over and began helping the children exit the bus, the mayor said.
While assisting, Matt was alerted that a 14-year-old boy was trapped underneath the bus. Using his six years of EMT experience, he provided care until additional responders arrived, Ghassali said.
Goldman, who started as an EMT at just 16 years old while a sophomore in high school, has spent nearly six years with TBVAC, an organization that provides a robust training program for new EMTs.
“Matt always knew he wanted to work in healthcare and was motivated to get involved in the community,” TBVAC said in a statement. “TBVAC inspired Matt to pursue a career in nursing, and he will be graduating with his BSN in May.”
In recognition of his bravery and selflessness, Montvale will honor Goldman as the borough’s 2025 Hometown Hero at a ceremony this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. during the Mayor and Council meeting.
Even Gov. Phil Murphy personally called Goldman to commend him, Ghassali said.
Meanwhile, the 14-year-old boy remains hospitalized in critical condition, the mayor said.
TBVAC, which offers high school students the opportunity to train as EMTs, says the experience sparks confidence, empathy, and purpose. Those interested in joining TBVAC can visit www.tbvacnj.org or email membership@tbvacnj.org for more information.
